If you're stuck for a gift idea this Valentine's Day and you're thinking about getting a tattoo emblazoned with the name of your loved-one, think again.
While tattoos might look good on the ribs of Megan Fox, the ankle of Nicole Richie or the chest of David Beckham, permanently stamping your body with your crush's name isn't a guarantee things are going to end up in marital bliss, or even a second date.
And with the current ephemeral state of relationships and a dating scene gone awry, it would seem that permanently inking your bod just isn't a good idea.
Take Aussie pop singer Peter Andre, who is removing a tattoo with the name of his ex-wife Katie Price after four years of marriage; or actor Charlie Sheen who had a large "Denise" tattoo on the inside of his wrist taken off after three years and a second child on the way. Not to mention stars such as Angelina Jolie (she had her "Billy Bob" tattoo covered up), Pamela Anderson (who changed "Tommy" to read "Mommy") and Johnny Depp, who changed "Winona Forever" to "Wino Forever". Sigh.
While tattooing was once the domain of sailors and prisoners, these days the latest slew of "it" girls getting inked and stamped, has meant that tattooing has been catapulted into the mainstream. Which also means they're becoming less and less original.
And according to the latest poll on the subject, carried out by UMR research, the men just aren't that into their girlfriends doing it.
The study found that, despite the increasing popularity in women getting inked, 56 per cent of blokes say that tattoos on women are highly "unattractive".
Donna Sozio, an expert on male turn-offs and author of Never Trust a Man in Alligator Loafers, says many women feel the same way about men and that tattoos are like men wearing paint.
"Especially the trendy tattoos of the tribal armband. It's become such a cliche. An immediate turn-off."
In order to get the full scope of the tattoo argument, I decided to catch up with Kat Von D, celebrity tattoo artist and host of the popular reality TV show LA Ink at her studio in Hollywood.
While she is known around the world as the ultimate "sex symbol" (despite every inch of her body being covered in tattoos, many of which she claims were done by friends with no tattooing experience - yeouch), she says it's not about the types or placement of tattoos, but it's all about how you carry yourself.
"You can have full body tattoos and still carry yourself in a feminine way," she says. "Some guys aren't into it. But whatever floats your boat."
While tattoos certainly don't float Sozio's boat, her advice to men wanting to impress a girl this Valentine's Day is to forget a permanent tattoo and settle for a henna one instead.
"You can get the name of your partner written in henna across your chest as a Valentine's Day present - or a prank ... now that would be a good present!"
It would indeed.
If you're wondering what are some other, less permanent weapons of mass seduction, here are my top tips ...
Weapons of Seduction
* A smile
* Subtle cleavage OR a mini skirt (never both!)
* High heels (that you can actually walk in)
* Dressing up for your partner (tastefully ... just don't let them videotape you)
* Having confidence and, most importantly, a sense of humour
Weapons of mass turn-off
* Badly applied fake tan (it smells and gets on his sheets too)
* Hair extensions (what good are you to a man if he cannot run his fingers through your hair?)
* Coming across as desperate
* Talking incessantly about your ex (or talking about sex with your ex, or fighting with your ex in public)
* Wearing a "F--- Off" on your forehead (how will you ever get approached?)
Good luck, and happy Valentine's Day!
